Can we start right now?
can we mix languages in a thread?
can we even use a language different than English?

Podemos? empezamos?
¿yes or si?

OOooooh do I detect a new victim.... er volunteer?

I think that Bel is the Community Editor to contact about Polyglot Plaza; Given that she and Tavaron, Malabarasta, Milla and Dmitri switched to German for speed and sanity in the email thread the other day, I do detect a certain keenness among the Senior Volunteers for Polyglot Plaza. It's just they are busy right now transferring people's accounts.

I suggest you contact Bel in the first instance once we've moved.

Hi there, I am all for this! Can speak English, German, and a bit of French, am Afrikaans speaking (perhaps not the only one here) and can easily understand Dutch; understand a teensy weensy bit of Danish and Spanish and interested in learning more of those!

Maria, seeing as they haven't censored you yet I assume you can indeed safely speak (well, write, but that doesn't alliterate) Spanish here!

I tried to set up a Polyglot Plaza space today, but something's not going to plan and I can't access it. Am waiting for Pastey to fix it.

Hi Willen,
lo intentamos? shall we try it?
I´m not sure if we should translate whatever we say, in that case the convo can be clumsy. I don´t mind the translation if it´s needed, if someone needs something clearer. Or me myself, maybe your Spanish expression is obscure and I need to know what you mean.

oh, and we can use voxopop or podomatic to do recording of our voices. Podomatic is great, register, record yourself and link your podcast here ( it´s done automaticly, it´s great that application) so...

Hola Maria! I understand what you say but I can't speak Spanish back at you! Yes I would like to try it. Yes it's OK if other people also join in. No I get no opportunity for ever speaking Spanish over here! I only know it from a Tintin comic and a few songs. I like most kinds of music from classial to heavy metal ... what I do not like is overly commercial pop music, rap/hip-hop, and jazz. Yes I know jazz is great music but I have difficulty getting into it.

OK! Let me teach you some Afrikaans words and phrases ... that have already been used here! (With English too!)

Atardecer = late afternoon = namiddag, laatmiddag

Empezamos = shall we begin/ let's begin = kom ons begin

... pero qualquiera puede contestar = but anyone can/may answer/reply = maar enigiemand mag antwoord

hasta luego = until then = tot dan/tot later ... but more appropriately, sien jou later (see you later)/ ons praat weer later (we'll speak again later)

Okay so how about anyone try to understand this:

Dis lekker om 'n nuwe taal te leer praat!

I know very little French, Italian, German and Polish. The biggest barrier for me in learning a new language is the pronunciation, as I can't talk from the back of my throat, talk through my nose or roll my r's, so I need to learn a language that is not guttural.

http://marikiya.podo...T09_31_27-07_00

El cuento se llama El Eclipse. It´s about a Spanish monk . It´s the time of the Spanish colonization of southamerica. The monk gets lost in the jungle of Guatemala. It´s captured by indigenas and when he is about to be ripped in the sacrificies stone, he remembers that because of his great erudition, he knows that that same day is going to be a solar eclipse. He says: if you kill me, I´ll make the sun go dark. After a while the heart of the monk is dripping blood and an indian is reciting the dates of solar and lunar eclipses the mayan astronomer had written in their codices.
Augusto Monterroso is a Guatemalan writer.

At the moment, English is the language on site (I know, I know, sorry). We're not able to allow posts in languages other than English until we have a system in place to deal with it.

Once the site is up and running we hope to get Polyglot Plaza going as soon as we can get the Translator volunteer group sorted out. I'm afriad I don't have a timescale for that though. :)

It will come, I'm sure. I'll set up the page first, then post it for discussion/approval, then contact those who offered their language skill services...

I didn't run away, I had to go take a bath and fix myself some dinner. I also went to get a 'Spanish for beginners' book. And when I come back I hear we can't speak Spanish here! Not even if we provide translations? Anyways I now really hope we can get the new site set up soon!

Bel do you have any idea what my Afrikaans sentence means? It is not far from German at all ...

Anyways Maria I'm happy to hear your musical tastes are similar to mine! I'll see about giving classical jazz a listen. Your voice doesn't sound that strange! Hope the sore throat gets better soon. Thanks for the short story (=kortverhaal) ... I could only make out a few words of it, but at least that's something!

So we can't speak Spanish here ... but I think we can still post videos! Here's one by a favourite band of mine:

Is Polyglot Plaza something for 2012?
