Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype

Posted Image Windows Live Messenger replicated much of the functionality of the firm's Skype division
Microsoft has announced it intends to "retire" its instant message chat tool and replace it with Skype's messaging tool.
The news comes 18 months after the software giant announced it was paying $8.5bn (£5.3bn) for the communications software developer.
Microsoft said Windows Live Messenger (WLM) would be turned off by March 2013 worldwide, with the exception of China.
It reflects the firm's determination to focus its efforts on Skype.
WLM launched in 1999 when it was known as MSN Messenger. Over time, photo delivery, video calls and games were added to the package's text-based messages.
In 2009, the firm said it had 330 million active users.
Chat 'cannibalisation'
According to internet analysis firm Comscore, WLM still had more than double the number of Skype's instant messenger facility at the start of this year and was second only in popularity to Yahoo Messenger.
But the report suggested WLM's US audience had fallen to 8.3 million unique users, representing a 48% drop year-on-year. By contrast, the number of people using Skype to instant message each other grew over the period.
"When a company has competing products that can result in cannibalisation it's often better to focus on a single one," said Brian Blau from the consultancy Gartner.
"Skype's top-up services offer the chance to monetise its users and Microsoft is also looking towards opportunities in the living room.

I havent used msn/live messenger in about 3years.. good riddance to an out-dated product. they got to the point they couldnt add much more to it, and even at that point it was losing interest.

Skype is bloated and a resource hog, but MSN bought Skype to replace MSN, so its not really a surprise.

There are many other instant messenger programs about that are better than Skype.

Yes you are right , Microsoft will be Scrapping Messenger in 2013. Reason for being is Skype is more Popular than MSN now .... So all Focus will be on Skype shortly there are alot of plans for Skype within the next few months to make it more user friendly , and to also have more Control over Certain stuff.

Because its so old and out dated , Skype is more popular now so they are wanting to put all effort into making skype the number one Client now.

But but i like MSN lol

If i or anyone wanted to use Skype then im sure they would download it

If i was the owner of Microsoft i would probably more advertise Skype as our primary messaging software but still keep MSN going as an alternative

Perfect news for Google, they will take full advantage.

Microsoft really is behind the times, to change something millions use to force them to use something else, really won't work. They did that with search and bing is what ? who knows bing lol

Maybe so ....

But it still offers just as much as Skype or any other messaging application

MSN is much more simple and as i mentioned before if people wanted to use skype as there main method of communication then they would download it

Everyone is trying to go head to head in the social networking area and offer the same services

This guy is partially on the right tracks

Actually, after years and years of use of MSN i find Skype more simple...

It takes AGES to add people on MSN nowdays
I usually makes both people add - that way it goes faster, i NEVER get any request up like it used to be...
You cant even change "the name" on msn without login in to your email account - i mean, why???

You all will Notice a Message Window poping up within the next 24/48 hours stateing Messenger and Skype are both coming together.

Which means you will be able to use your E-mail And Password which you use for Messenger to sign into Skype with and Still able to have all your Messenger Contacts on it.

So don't panic ....

Today i have formatted my pc and started all over again with it, which means i had to reinstall Skype of course. Now it gives me the option to sign in with my msn account. Theres one thing though that i have always wanted to know with Skype........just how do you make the text bigger?. Because the default size it makes all the text you write is rather small, how do u make it bigger?
